Jay Leno gives you a tour of the incredible NextEngine 3D scanner, a device/system that can reproduce sophisticated mechanical parts in plastic. Objects are laser-scanned and a highly-detailed digital model is generated. That 3D model is then grown layer-by-layer using a computer-controlled device that deposits molten plastic dots at specific locations. The perfectly copied plastic part can then be converted into metal or some other kind of material using conventional means.
